Join the African American Program and the Detre Library & Archives for the annual African American Genealogy Workshop on Saturday, May 7. Presented in partnership with the Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society of Pittsburgh, the Department of Africana Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, and Highmark, the virtual program will focus on archiving family collections.
Many people have harbored memorabilia related to their family’s history. They are accustomed to keeping family memorabilia and heirlooms in shoeboxes, trunks, or under beds and in closets and garages. Family bibles that list the births, deaths, marriages, and other vital information of generations of kin are treasures. Some families have chosen to donate their collections to archival repositories and museums. For both methods there are professional preservation techniques that need to be used to care for the long-term life of the material.
This workshop will focus on identifying home methods of preservation that threaten the life of collections as well as provide professional methods the repositories use to ensure preservation and connect with methods used for centuries.
The workshop will be led by Samuel W Black, the director of the History Center’s African American Program. He will be joined by attorney and genealogist Martha R. Conley and Aaisha Haykal, the manager of archival services at the College of Charleston’s Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture.
The African American Genealogy Workshop is sponsored by Highmark and AHN.
